1. What do the Government agencies and authorities call a Forklift Drivers Licence?
A National Certificate of Competency is accepted in all Australian States and Territories and some overseas worksites, indicating that the holder has a basic core of competencies to operate the particular class of plant specified.
2. At what age can I get a forklift Certificate of Competency?
You must be 18 years or older to be assessed or have been granted an exemption issued by Worksafe.
3. Do I need a learners permit?
No, the learners permit system was discontinued
in 1995.
4. Do I need a Certificate of Competency for a
Pedestrian forklift?
Not any more. It was a requirement until 1995,
but is no longer a certificate class. Information and training is however, still a requirement under the O H & S Act.
5. What does LF & LO mean?
LF means any and every Forklift except for an Order Picker/Stock Picker Forklift.
LO means Order Picker/Stock Picker. This forklift is the type where the operator goes up in the air with the forkarms and load.
6. Do I have to pay to renew my Competency Certificate?
No, at the moment the application fee is for ever.
7. I have a forklift licence gained overseas. Is this enough to drive with in Australia?
No, there is no ability to transfer overseas forklift qualifications to an Australian National Certificate of Competency.
8. Can I practice at work?
Yes, provided you are supervised by the holder of a Forklift Certificate of Competency. You may be required to record this training in a training log book.
9. Can I be tested at work?
Yes, Ausfork is able to provide training and assessment services almost anywhere.
10. My work is not suitable, can I come to Ausfork ?
Yes, Ausfork have training centres located right across metropolitan Melbourne and run both mid-week and week-end courses.
11. I have an old style Forklift Certificate showing class 8A1. What type of forklift can I operate?
The old style 8A! certificate allows the holder to operate an LF class forklift of up to 10 tonne capacity.
12. Can I transfer this old style certificate to a new National Certificate?
Yes, by completing a Worksafe C7 form available from Worksafe or Ausfork and returning to Worksafe with a fee of $37.00 and your old style certificate. A new National Certificate will be issued.
13. I have lost or misplaced my National Certificate of Competency. Can I get it replaced ?
Yes, by completing Worksafe C3 form and returning to Worksafe with a fee of $23.50.
14. Can I drive a forklift on the road?
Yes, provided it is registered (under the Road Traffic Act), the owner gives permission, the vehicle is in a roadworthy condition and you have both a Forklift Certificate and a Vic Roads car licence.
15. How often should I do Refresher Training?
Most employers are looking to do Forklift Refresher Training between every 12 months and every 2 years depending on site hazards and other requirements.
